Lt. Gen. Minhazul Alam Appointed Force Commander of UN Peacekeeping Mission in Cyprus

United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus has appointed Bangladeshi Army officer Lieutenant General Mohammad Asadullah Minhazul Alam as its new Force Commander. The senior military officer, recently promoted to Lieutenant General, was selected for this prestigious role by António Guterres.
The appointment was confirmed in a UN press release issued on April 8. Lt. Gen. Minhazul Alam will replace Erdenebat Batsuuri, whose contributions were acknowledged with appreciation by the UN Secretary-General.
With over 30 years of experience in the Bangladesh Army, Lt. Gen. Minhazul Alam has held numerous key leadership and command positions. Most recently, he served as General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Army Training and Doctrine Command. Previously, he served as GOC of the 10th Infantry Division and Area Commander of Cox’s Bazar, as well as Commandant of the Defense Services Command and Staff College.
Throughout his career, he has played significant roles in counter-terrorism operations, internal security, disaster management, and intelligence-based missions.
He also brings substantial international peacekeeping experience, having served as Sector Commander in the Central African Republic under a UN mission, and as a Military Observer in East Timor.
Academically accomplished, Lt. Gen. Minhazul Alam earned a PhD in International Relations from Jahangirnagar University. He also holds a Master’s degree in National Security Strategy from the National Defense University, a Master’s in Defense Studies from National University Bangladesh, and an MBA from Royal University of Dhaka.
The appointment has been widely welcomed as a proud achievement for Bangladesh, reflecting the country’s growing contribution and leadership in global peacekeeping efforts.
