Two student advisers of the interim government-Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan and Md Mahfuz Alam—are likely to step down from the advisory council ahead of the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election. According to political insiders, the pair is expected to announce their resignations formally after participating in Thursday’s regular advisory council meeting, which is anticipated to be their final session.
In preparation for their departure, ministries and divisions currently under their supervision have begun making administrative arrangements to ensure a smooth transition of responsibilities. Sources indicate that Brig Gen (Retd) M Sakhawat Hossain may be appointed to oversee the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives. Meanwhile, Associate Professor Ali Riaz-recently appointed as senior assistant adviser—is likely to take charge of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The Ministry of Youth and Sports may continue under the supervision of a senior adviser.
Both advisers are expected to take part in the upcoming election, potentially as independent candidates, following their resignation. At present, Asif Mahmud supervises the Local Government and Youth and Sports Ministries, while Mahfuz Alam is responsible for Information and Broadcasting. The two have already informed the chief adviser verbally about their intention to step down.
Asif Mahmud and Mahfuz Alam joined the interim cabinet on August 8, 2024, just days after the previous government’s collapse on August 5. In recent weeks, their active roles in the interim administration have sparked debate, with several political parties questioning the neutrality expected from advisory council members. Senior officials within the advisory council have reportedly encouraged the duo to resign to uphold the integrity of the election process.
Thursday’s council meeting will officially conclude their tenure, while the relevant ministries move forward with transition plans to maintain continuity in governance and administrative operations.
