Tragically, young Sajid, who fell into an uncovered hand pump well in Tanore, Rajshahi, did not survive. He was pronounced dead at 9:40 p.m. by doctors at Tanore Upazila Health Complex’s emergency department.
According to the medical team, Sajid was brought to the health complex at 9:35 p.m., but he had already passed away.
Lieutenant Colonel Tajul Islam Chowdhury, Director of Operations at the Fire Service and Civil Defence, confirmed that Sajid was rescued at 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, 11 December.
The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon in Koelhat village of Panchandar Union. Sajid had been crossing a field covered with straw alongside his mother and brother. Unaware that a deep, uncovered well lay beneath the straw, Sajid suddenly fell in. Hearing his cries for “Mama, Mama,” his mother rushed back but could not prevent the accident.
Local sources explained that a year ago, a deep hand pump well had been partially dug here but abandoned after reaching 120 feet without finding water. Heavy rainfall last year enlarged the opening, and with no protective cover or warning signs, the area became hazardous.
Hundreds gathered at the site, while Sajid’s mother stayed awake beside the well throughout the night, praying desperately for her child’s survival. Rescue teams continued supplying oxygen into the well, with medical staff and local officials present at the scene. Initially, cries were heard from inside the well, but over time, they stopped, raising concerns among the rescuers.
Earlier in the evening, Lt. Col. Tajul Islam Chowdhury stated that Sajid’s chances of survival were slim, but the rescue operation would continue until the child was retrieved, whether alive or deceased.
