The village air was heavy with grief as news spread that two-year-old Sajid, son of Rakib Uddin from Koelhat Purba Para, had passed away. On Friday morning at 10:30 a.m., Sajid was laid to rest at the Nekkeri Cemetery following a funeral prayer in an open field.

As the announcement echoed from the mosque speakers, daily life in the village came to a halt—fields were left unattended, and shops remained closed. Villagers, from elders to schoolchildren, dressed in traditional attire, walked along the streets toward Sajid’s home, hoping to catch a final glimpse of his innocent face, once filled with smiles, now silenced by tragedy.

By the time of the funeral prayer, the field was filled with villagers, their eyes wet with tears. Whispers of sorrow could be heard among them. When Sajid’s tiny body, wrapped in white cloth, was brought forward, the mournful cries echoed around. His mother tried repeatedly to approach, but villagers gently restrained her, though no one could stop the tears.

The funeral prayer was led by Kazi Maulana Mizanur Rahman, and as the Takbir was recited, thousands of hands rose in supplication. Villagers prayed for Sajid’s forgiveness and for strength and patience for his grieving family.

As the small coffin was carried to the grave, the village seemed to pause in solemn silence, broken only by heartfelt sobs. The funeral of a single child united the entire village in grief—a sight many villagers said they had never witnessed before.

Sajid had gone missing on Wednesday, 10 December, around 12:30 p.m., after falling into a deep uncovered hand pump well in Koelhat Purba Para, Panchandar Union. Fire service personnel dug 40 feet of soil and rescued him after 32 hours, but doctors at Tanore Upazila Health Complex declared him dead upon arrival.
