The first session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad will begin on March 12, following a summons issued by President Mohammed Shahabuddin. The parliamentary sitting will commence at 11:00 a.m. on that day.
The decision was announced in a press release issued by the Parliament Secretariat on Monday. According to the statement, the President convened the session by exercising his authority under Article 72(1) of the Constitution.
As per parliamentary tradition, the President will address the first sitting of the newly elected parliament, highlighting the government’s past development activities as well as outlining future plans and priorities. This will be followed by a general discussion on a motion of thanks on the President’s address.
A total of 297 Members of Parliament elected in the 13th general election have already taken their oaths, and other required formalities have been completed. However, the formal commencement of parliamentary business will take place on March 12 through the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
Sources at the Parliament Secretariat said that the Speaker and Deputy Speaker will be elected at the very beginning of the session. Following the election, the newly elected Speaker will preside over the House, marking the start of the main parliamentary proceedings.
